We all make decisions at times in our lives that we wouldn’t make again. Maybe a previous abortion is one of those decisions for you.
If you don’t want another abortion, there are options available—parenting and adoption. Keep reading to learn more about these alternatives. You can also schedule an appointment to discuss your situation with The Open Door team. We’re here to help.
Parenting: Rewarding and Challenging
Parenting is the natural result if you decide against having an abortion or making an adoption plan. An accurate way to describe this choice is both rewarding and challenging.
Some women may love the idea of being a mom, raising a child with some of their characteristics, experiencing milestones, and building a lifelong relationship. Others might have mixed feelings about parenting and the responsibilities, or they may not feel ready.
Other women could want to parent but worry about the financial, educational, relationship, or career impacts of parenting. If you are one of these women, your concerns are valid. We highly recommend talking with a caring professional about your situation so you can receive help and know your support options.
There are many resources available to make this choice possible. Ask us about all the assistance you can access through The Open Door and our programs. You’ll be surprised to find out the variety of referrals we have to meet your most pressing needs.
Adoption: Crafting a Plan
We recognize that women usually are not choosing between parenting and adoption because they are very different choices. However, if you do not want an abortion, don’t want to be a parent, or are not in a position to parent, adoption is an option.
Adoption involves working with an adoption agency or attorney to transfer your parental rights to an adoptive family of your choice. You can make decisions about your privacy, how much communication you want, and other adoption preferences.
Keep in mind, though, that open adoption, when you have direct contact with the adoptive family and child, is not legally enforceable in Texas. This means it’s essential to find an adoptive family willing and interested in maintaining open communication with you if you are interested in this type of plan.
If adoption sounds like your preferred choice, talk with The Open Door about referrals to reputable adoption agencies. You can ask them all your questions and further explore whether it could be an option for you.
