No one would ever say making an adoption plan for your child isn’t hard, but sometimes the hardest decision to make turns out to be the best decision of your life. It’s true, choosing adoption is a hard decision, but it can also have an amazing outcome for you and your child. Do you want to know more about adoption?
Why Would I Choose Adoption?
Maybe you’ve heard someone say, “She gave up her child for adoption.” A loving mother never “gives up” anything. She chooses what’s best for herself and her child. There are a lot of reasons to choose adoption. Can you relate to any of these situations?
- You’re too young to be a mother
- You’re just beginning school or a new career
- You don’t want the day-to-day responsibilities of being a mom but also don’t want to have an abortion
- Your current relationship is unstable and your environment isn’t safe for a child
- You have other children and there just aren’t the finances, energy, or time for another one
Choosing adoption doesn’t mean you aren’t a loving mother. It means you love your child so much, you’re willing to give them a better life than the one you can currently provide.
The Adoption Process
Today, the expecting mother (and father, if available) make all of the decisions. You choose the adoptive family, the type of environment you want for your child, and the specific adoption plan you’re most comfortable with.
Begin by finding a reputable adoption agency or specialist to work with. You need someone who can walk through the entire process with you, It’s also important to choose someone who can offer support and counseling during and after the process. A reputable agency or person will never ask you for money. All of their services should be free for you.
Adoption Plans
Adoption plans are created, for the most part, by what type of relationship you wish to have with the adoptive family and your child. There are three general plans, but each can be modified according to your requests.
Open adoption is the most common today. This plan allows you to have direct contact with the adoptive family and ultimately, your child. As you see your child grow, you can reassure yourself you made the right decision.
For complete privacy, you would make a closed adoption plan. No identifying information such as names or locations is shared. Some women feel this is an easier way to move on with their lives.
A semi-open adoption plan is somewhere in between the first two. You have the ability to contact the adoptive family and your child, but all communication is done through the adoption specialist you’ve chosen.
Please note: Open adoptions are not legally enforceable in the state of Texas.
