What Is Abortion?

Abortion is a procedure that ends a pregnancy. It carries certain risks and side effects you should be aware of before making a final decision.

The Open Door does not provide or refer for abortions. However, we offer accurate information on this option and can provide a free pre-abortion screening to protect your health.

Learn About This Option

By learning about what an abortion procedure entails, you can equip yourself with the facts and make a decision that considers your well-being.

There are two main types of abortion procedures: medical abortion and surgical abortion.

Medical Abortion

Medical abortion uses drugs to end a pregnancy. It is FDA-approved only through 10 weeks gestation.

Two drugs are used during this process. The first drug is called mifepristone, which blocks progesterone.

Progesterone is a hormone needed for the pregnancy to develop. Without it, the pregnancy will detach from the uterine lining and end.

Misoprostol is taken next. This drug causes the uterus to contract, which expels the pregnancy from the body.

Taking these drugs will cause abdominal cramping and vaginal bleeding. However, it can result in additional side effects, including:

  • Upset stomach
  • Vomiting
  • Fever
  • Chills
  • Diarrhea
  • Headache

Medical abortion (also called the “abortion pill”) is also associated with specific health risks, including:

  • Digestive symptoms
  • Fever
  • Infection
  • Heavy bleeding
  • Incomplete abortion (pregnancy tissue remains in the uterus, requiring another procedure)

Surgical Abortion

Surgical abortion procedures use various methods, including surgical instruments, suctioning, and drugs, to end the pregnancy.

After the procedure, a woman can have spotting or light bleeding and mild cramping. Serious risks are associated with the procedure, including:

  • Uterine perforation (when a surgical tool pokes a hole in the uterus)
  • Damage to the bowel or bladder
  • Severe bleeding
  • Infection

Confirming your pregnancy, learning about this option, and discussing your specific medical history with a healthcare provider are essential steps to take before deciding.

Additionally, it’s critical to note that abortion is illegal in Texas except for certain circumstances when the life or health of the woman is at risk. However, women cannot be held criminally or civilly liable for abortion.
