Seeing the results of a pregnancy test can stir up many emotions.
Whether the test is positive or negative, deciding who to share this news with can feel complicated. Should you tell your partner right away? What about your closest friend? Choosing how and when to share your results is an important step.
Before you begin those conversations, confirm your pregnancy test results with lab-quality testing and an ultrasound. The Open Door Pregnancy & Family Resource Center offers these services for free at both our Breckenridge and Cisco locations.
Sharing Pregnancy Test Results with Your Partner
If you’re in a relationship, it may feel natural—but also intimidating—to share your results with your partner. You may be tempted to send him a quick text or a picture of the pregnancy test.
Instead, we recommend telling him in person (as long as you do not have any safety concerns). Choose a private, comfortable setting where you won’t feel rushed. Maybe you have your best conversations at a restaurant or in the car. Choose a place that works for both of you.
When you share your positive pregnancy test news, be honest and straightforward. Remember that you don’t need to have all the answers figured out right away.
Give him time to process. Even if his first reaction isn’t what you hoped for, his feelings may shift after he has had time to think.
If you are worried about his reaction or safety, consider talking in a public place, bringing a trusted support person, or sharing the news over the phone. If you ever feel unsafe, call 911 or contact the National Domestic Violence Hotline.
Sharing Pregnancy Test Results with a Friend
A trusted friend can provide emotional support and encouragement as you process your next steps. Choose someone who has your best interests at heart and can listen without judgment. Sharing during a relaxed hangout or quiet moment together can make the conversation easier.
Be prepared that your friend may have questions or be surprised at first. However, a true friend will stand by you as you navigate this season.
What About Sharing Negative Test News?
Receiving a negative test is still an emotional experience. It could be a good opportunity to have a conversation with your partner about your plans and goals for the future, as well as your plan to prevent pregnancy if you are not ready for that phase in your relationship.
