Can Pregnancy Go Unnoticed?
In rare cases, a pregnancy may go unnoticed for longer than expected. This is sometimes called a cryptic pregnancy, and it can happen when:
- Symptoms are mild or absent, especially in the first few weeks
- Symptoms overlap with everyday fatigue, nausea, headaches, or mood changes
- Irregular cycles, which can make a missed period harder to identify
- Light spotting may occur (which can have several causes, including implantation bleeding)
- Pregnancy feels unlikely, even with contraception or careful planning
Not having symptoms doesn’t rule out pregnancy, especially with irregular periods. For more reliable results, take a pregnancy test a few days after a missed period or about three weeks after possible conception. Testing too early can cause a false negative. Rarely, false positives can occur due to medical conditions, medications, or an early miscarriage.
If results are unclear, consider retesting or speaking with a medical professional.
Why Pregnancy Testing and Ultrasound Matter
Pregnancy tests detect a hormone called human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), which is produced after a fertilized egg implants in the uterus. While a positive test can confirm pregnancy hormones are present, an ultrasound may provide additional clarity.
If pregnancy testing is positive, an ultrasound may help confirm:
- How far along is the pregnancy may be
- Whether the pregnancy appears to be located in the uterus
- Whether there are signs of viability, such as a detectable heartbeat, or signs of early pregnancy loss (miscarriage)
This information can also help identify an ectopic pregnancy, which occurs when a fertilized egg implants outside the uterus, most often in a fallopian tube. Ectopic pregnancy can become life-threatening if the fallopian tube ruptures and causes internal bleeding, which requires emergency care.
