If you’ve discovered you are unexpectedly pregnant while in college, you more than likely feel isolated. Plus, fatigue and nausea make studying more difficult. Where do you turn? Who can you talk to?
The caring advocates at The Open Door want you to know you are not alone. We’re here to help. You have federally protected rights through Title IX to ensure you can succeed academically. Your college must accommodate your physical and educational needs. Let’s take a closer look.
What Are My Rights as a Pregnant College Student?
According to Title IX, these are your rights as a pregnant student:
- You must be granted the ability to continue participating in classes and extracurricular activities without discrimination.
- The school must honor excused absences prescribed by your healthcare professional regarding pregnancy or childbirth.
- You can return to class with the same academic and extracurricular status.
- Your professors must allow you to complete missed work.
- The school must protect you from any harassment.
- The college must make special accommodations, such as a larger desk, more bathroom breaks, access to the elevators, etc.
Know your rights by reading Title IX thoroughly and speaking with the college’s Title IX coordinator or counselor. Pregnancy cannot legally keep you from having equal educational opportunities.
